Using the Geography Web Server

Connecting with File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

The only way you can connect is with FTP. Dreamweaver and other .html editors work with FTP. You may already have FTP or WS_FTP on your computer. Check your program files for FTP before downloading. If you already have FTP or WS_FTP installed on your computer, please skip ahead to "Logging on with the FTP program".

Download WS_FTP

If you don't already have the FTP program on your computer, you can download it for free from Penn State here: http://www.pac-its.psu.edu/windows/utils/ftp/. The web page looks like this. Click the link under "Get It"

Download FTP

Using the VPN client

You will only need to use the VPN client if you want to connect from home or outside college network. The VPN client can be found here (requires access id login): https://www2.ems.psu.edu/net/VPN/. You will need to request access via the VPN. Here are some instructions: https://www2.ems.psu.edu/net/VPN/addform.php

Installing the FTP program

Follow the step-by-step installation instructions for FTP or WS_FTP. Then go to the place where you saved the program. Open the FTP or WS_FTP folder:

Open the FTP or WS_FTP program

Launching the FTP Program

Click on the FTP95.exe or WS_FTP95.exe icon to launch the program.

Logging on with the FTP program

A log-on screen will appear:

Logging In

Using FTP

When you are logged in, you will be dropped into a directory that is appropriate to your ID (i.e. the course folder for the course you're teaching). If you are listed as working on numerous courses, you will be put in "/net/www/www.geog.psu.edu/htdocs/courses", and you will have to navigate to the appropriate directory.
