Instructions for Regular Internship (GEOG 495)

1. Contact Dr. Adam Rose, Department of Geography Internship Coordinator, and provide information on the following:

You are encouraged to come to his office at the outset and during your internship. Note also, it is possible to earn credit for internship-level work retroactively.

2. After receiving a preliminary go ahead from Dr. Rose, inform your employer that he/she will be receiving an internship contract. View the Geography Internship Contract. Note that internships under the supervision of Department of Geography faculty do not require contracts.

3. Assist your employer with any questions on the internship contract (or refer your employer to Dr. Rose). Confirm that the contract has been filled out and returned to Dr. Rose if applicable.

4. After my approval, register for credit for Geography 495. Registration for this course is departmentally controlled, so you will have to:

          a. Get a special "Drop/Add" form from Michele Henry in 302 Walker Building.

          b. Get Dr. Rose's signature on the form.

          c. If you are registering for more than three credits, it is best to split them in groups of three credits over the appropriate number of sections. This way it will be easier to assign your internship credits to more than one set of degree requirements.

          d. Return the form to Michele, so that she can enter your registration on eLion.

5. Complete your internship duties/learning experience.

6. Have your employer provide Dr. Rose with a brief summary evaluation of your work (including tasks, learning, products, and quality of your effort).

7. Provide Dr. Rose with a five-six page summary of, and reflections on, your internship experience (feel free to include photographs, maps, project reports, etc.). He strongly encourages you to deliver this illustrated report as part of your personal e-portfolio. For more information about e-portfolios, click here.

8. Confirm that you have received a grade from Dr. Rose (based on your employer's report and your report).

GIS Internships (GEOG 495A):

Details of GIScience Internships should be worked out with Professor Alan MacEachren, the faculty member in charge of this course.

Teaching Internships (GEOG 495B):

Note that details of a teaching internship should be worked out directly with the faculty member with whom you are working. That faculty member will also assign you your grade. Students working on teaching internships should sign up for Geography 495B.

For more information about geography internships, contact Dr. Adam Rose at 814-863-0179 or e-mail him at azr1@psu.edu.
