Geography Awareness Week, Nov. 14-18, 2005
Geography Awareness Week 2005 takes place during the week of November 14-18. Since 1987, the National Geographic Society has sponsored Geography Awareness Week to promote geographic literacy in schools, communities, and organizations around the world. Penn State will open its doors to teachers and students, hosting programs to teach geographic literacy, throughout the week. The following list describes a variety of activities that will be taking place throughout the Department of Geography.
Gamma Theta Upsilon will hold their induction for new members at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 17 in 319 Walker Building. Alumnus Geoff Hatchard (M.S. 2003) will offer a keynote address. Geoff was inducted into GTU at his undergraduate institution, Michigan State University, and he now works as an Edit Cartographer with the National Geographic Society. .
The Penn State chapter of Supporting Women in Geography group (S.W.I.G.) will host "Supporting Young Women in Geography" Day on Friday, November 18. Twenty-five students, as well as their teachers, from local middle and high schools will visit the department to learn about various geography topics including biodiversity, fair trade, women's rights issues, and geographic information systems. All department faculty members, graduate students, undergraduate students, and staff are invited to participate in this event.
Throughout the week, UnderDOGS, an undergraduate student group in the Department of Geography, will give presentations to EMS First Year Seminars and introductory geography courses, in an effort to promote the geography major and minors.
