The Miombo Network

A partnetship of scientists, natural resource managers and policy makers interested in the sustainable development of the Miombo Ecosystem and region. .The Miombo Network home has moved from the University of Virginia to Penn State University, and is housed within the Global Environmental Change Lab within the Department of Geography.

The Miombo Network was founded in 1995 under the auspices of the IGBP, LUCC and START, and has national level activies in the following countries: Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania &South Africa, with coordination provided through Penn State.

  • Miombo LCLUC: Study of Processes of Land Use and Land Cover Change (NASA LCLUC Program)
  • Miombo Watch: Mapping and Monitoring Land Cover Changes (GOFC/GOLD)
  • Southern Africa Millennium Ecosystem Assessment: Integrated Assessment of the Zambezi River Basin
  • Integrated Assessment of Climate Change Impacts and Adpatation Options in the Miombo (AIACC/START/UNEP/TWAS)
  • National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPA) for Least Developed Countries under the UNFCCC (CIDA, UNFCCC)
  • Capacity Building in Use of GIS and Remote Sensing in Environmental Modeling and Assessment (State Department)
