BIOSKETCH:

I have conducted research in forested landscapes for the past 10 years on forest biometrics, land use-land cover change, impacts of land use on biodiversity, impacts of climate change, and vulnerability assessment. I have coordinated the Miombo Network since 1995, a science network that covers Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and DRC, including partners from forestry and mapping institutions in these countries. I  have conducted fieldwork in Malawi (Kasungu, Zomba), Mozambique (Nampula  and Manica), Zimbabwe (Mzola, Bulawayo, Marondera) as well as other countries in Southern Africa as well as the Lake States Region in Michigan. I have served as principal investigator on grants from NSF,  NASA, USDA, NOAA, State Department, IGBP, START, CIDA and WWF. This work has led to development of quantitative methods and models in five main areas: MIOMBO - a vegetation dynamics model; MELT - a spatial land use change for the Miombo region; MIMOSA - an integrated regional assessment  model; WoodCAS - a woodland carbon accounting system; and PRIVA/CHIRA-  a Participatory Rapid Integrated Vulnerability Assessment/Climate Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment tool.

I am currently advising least developed countries in their planning for  adaptation to climate change under the climate change convention,  including the rapid assessments of their vulnerabilities in order to  identify urgent and immediate needs for adaptation. I coordinated the  Africa Chapter in the latest IPCC assessment of impacts of climate  change. Some of my research is in exploration of the potential for carbon sequestration projects in rural communities (in Nampula and Manica) by soil improvement strategies and reduced slash and burn  agriculture, and have been measuring carbon recovery under different  land use regimes for the last few years to calibrate carbon accounting models. I am leading a group that is developing an integrated regional  assessment model for southern Africa under the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and the UNEP/TWAS/START programme on climate change impacts  and adaptation (AIACC). I serve on several international committees including the UNFCCC Least Developed Country Expert Group (on  adaptation); the IPCCs Task group on Climate Impacts Assessment (TGCIA);  the Full Bright Specialist Environmental Sciences review panel; and the Technical Committee of the Southern African Millennium Assessment Project. I have coordinated the IGBP/LUCC/START Miombo Network since 1995.
