  • Are you interested in learning more about GIScience?
  • Would you like to work on mapping projects for clients here at Penn State?

The Gould Center for Geography Education and Outreach is accepting applications from current Penn State undergraduate students for a Spring 2010 GIScience intern to work on mapping projects for the Department of Geography.

The goal of this internship will be to create maps for various Penn State departments, colleges, and research centers. Most of the projects will be on an ad hoc basis for clients across campus.

Past year’s interns have worked on the following projects:

  • Mapped the locations of Geography Department alumni across the U.S. and world using GIS and Flash
  • Assisted in updating the Penn State Visitor’s Guide using Adobe Illustrator
  • Created interactive maps that show where students have completed internships
  • Created a map depicting locations of Geography Bee participants
  • Redesigned the Penn State University Park Interactive Campus Map
  • Plus many other projects.

All data, reference materials, and guidance will be provided. Design and cartographic creativity are encouraged. All work will be done using ArcGIS 9.x and other software such as Adobe Illustrator and Flash. You will have some flexibility to design your own work schedule. A minimum of 5 hours per week is required for 1 credit, but up to 3 credits of GEOG 495G can be earned for 15 hours of work per week. Weekly meetings will also be required and included in your work hours. Cindy Brewer as well as Beth King and Jim Detwiler will be available to provide additional support and feedback on technical questions. Experience using ArcGIS is required and previous coursework in GIS and cartography (GEOG 361 and 363) is preferred.
