Kent Mathewson presided in the absence of Paul
Frederic whose wife was injured in a fall just prior to the meeting.
Kent
attended the chair's meeting and reported on those discussions. The
new structure of the AAG journal was a major concern. In our
discussion, the question of "Where do we (HOG) fit in the overall scheme?"
was considered. Reg Golledge has said that the expertise of the
specialty groups should be drawn upon more heavily.
The minutes from the last meeting were
accepted. Due to the absence of Paul Frederic and the subsequent
non-receipt of the FAX from him with the information from the AAG central
office, no treasurer's report was available. <> Our
members include only twenty-six persons without e-mail addresses.
These people receive the newsletter by ordinary mail. Hard copies
were available from Jodi Vender. The significance of electronic
archives was discussed and the determination made that we need to bring to
the attention of the publicity editor the importance of this resource and
the lack of geographical materials.
<>
The Geography in America
Timeline was distributed and discussed by Donald C. Dahmann.
Comments, ideas, and materials can be sent to him at
ddahmann@yahoo.com. <>
Orland
Maxfield reported on the failure of the initiative proposed last year to
interview J. Russell Whitaker. Repeated efforts to arrange the
interview were declined, and Dr. Whitaker and his wife have since passed
away. <>
A brief discussion
of the organization of retired geographers ensued. Any ideas of what
we as a group could be doing to plan for the 2004 meeting should be
submitted to Paul Frederic. <> Mike
Dorn reported that the Historical Geography Specialty Group is exploring
interest in establishing an H-Net list for Historical Geography. For
more information o the status of this project, contact him at
mldorn00@pop.uky.edu. Mike is also maintaining the list serve for
our group.
The meeting was then
adjourned.
