Submitted by Paul B. Frederic, Chair

I. Statement - The statement concerning the History of Geography Specialty Group (HOG) as it appears on the AAG Website should be amended to indicate dues of $4.00 for regular members and $0.00 for students.  Also, the Chair's e-mail address is: frederic@mail.caps.maine.edu.  All other aspects of the entry are correct.

II. Officers - See attached.

III. Accomplishments and Plans - During the past year HOG has accomplished a variety of tasks.  These are:

A.  Election; a full slate of officers was elected and a Newsletter Editor appointed (all positions effective March 1998).

B.  By-laws; At the March 27, 1998 business meeting, by-laws were approved (see attached).

C.  Newsletters; Acting Chair, Frederic mailed two News-letters (May and December) to all members (attached).

D.        Sessions for Annual Meeting; HOG co-sponsored twopaper sessions and sponsored one panel at Boston.

E.        Selection of Authors; a committee was established to produce a chapter for Geography in America at the Dawn of the 21st Century, edited by Gaile and Willmott.

F.  Plans; HOG will sponsor/co-sponsor at least two sessions at the 1999 Annual Meeting, contribute a chapter to the volume on Geography in America at the Dawn of the 21st Century, produce two Newsletters, construct a website and examine suggestions concerning the establishment of HOG-related awards (student, service, publication, etc.).  As a new specialty group, HOG is just emerging from the birth process and its future involves growth and the bring together of individuals to promote is mission.

IV.  Membership - As of April 8, 1998 HOG has a membership of 110, a significant increase from the 76 of March 1997.  This growth (+45%) is encouraging.  About 15% of membership attended the business meeting.  The group is moving into its second year of existence and it is a bit early to determine the general level of cohesiveness and enthusiasm.
