Chair Paul Frederic called the meeting to order.
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved. Materials are
being kept by the secretary.
The treasury is being held by the AAG. They report a
balance of $82 for 12/31/97. Dues for 97-98 amounted to $112 for a
12/31/98 balance of $194. Deposits from dues received for 98-99 have
totaled $230. The account should currently contain $424.
Newsletter expenses of $44.58 are being submitted at this meeting.
Also, a small additional requisition for conference related expenses will
be submitted. [$11.72. The post meeting balance should be $367.70.]
A nominating committee of the entire membership submitted names
for the elections which were held by mail ballot. Due to a tie, a
runoff ballot will be mailed, so results are yet to be determined.
The next election will require election of a director to serve for three
years, a chair to serve for two years, and a secretary/treasurer with a
two year term. A nominating committee will be appointed by the chair
to develop the slate of candidates.
The definition of corresponding member was discussed. The
issue should be passed to the appropriate committee of the AAG for action.
The Annals-PG structure issue was discussed. In
conclusion, it was suggested that concerned persons speak directly with
council members.
A draft of the HOG Chapter in Geography in America was submitted
by Geoffrey Martin. Paul Frederic read it in the designated paper
session. The draft is due on April 15.
The ARGWorld project for World Geography for middle schools and
high school was discussed.
Tentative ideas for the next meeting were presented. The
possibilities for a field trip pertinent to the group’s interests were
considered.
Jodi Vender, the Newsletter Editor, reported that two issues
were sent out either electronically, and thirty copies were sent to people
who could not receive soft copies. No requests for hard copies were
received from web recipients. Appropriate materials for the
newsletter should be submitted to her. Two issues a year will
continue to be produced. A different color will be used for the hard
copy of each volume. This year the color was tan.
Mike Dorn at the University of Kentucky is maintaining the list
serve. Jodi Vender is maintaining the web pages.
Other business determined that J. Russell Whitaker should be
interviewed for the Geographers on Film series. He is 99 years old.
His contributions to the field were discussed. A resolution was
proposed that: “To encourage and promote the completion of the interview
of J. Russell Whitaker for the Geographers on Film Series, the specialty
group will underwrite up to $200 of the expenses.” This resolution
was approved. It is hoped that other subgroups of the AAG will
further support and promote this project.
The lack and loss of departmental histories was discussed.
Efforts to obtain this type of information could be a worthwhile project
for the group.
The meeting was adjourned.
