On Tuesday, October 25 the Centre County Board of Commissioners recognized Penn State Assistant Professor Clio Andris, director of the Friendly Cities Lab, and the Penn State student group STEMComm for winning a $5,000 Emerging Cities Champions grant from 880 Cities & the Knight Foundation for their proposal to promote local public transit by dressing up five Centre County Transportation vans for Halloween.

Students at several State College Area School District elementary schools submitted the designs for the mini-bus costumes, and winners from each school were chosen. The County and project participants also intend to enter one of the buses in the State College Halloween parade on October 30, 2016. The five vans will drive around on Monday, October 31, 2016 dressed in their costumes.

Project director Andris says, “These mini-buses are an important part of Centre County’s infrastructure. They provide on-demand transportation for seniors and the disabled, and deliver meals to residents all over the county. They were recently dispatched to help the recovery efforts after the recent flooding in Centre County. We hope this project will draw fresh attention to the mini-buses and the important role public transportation plays in Centre County.” Andris was also impressed with the creativity of the local students: “The designs we received from the elementary school students were awesome, we loved every one of them. We are grateful to the teachers and administrators for their help, and for letting us work with the students.”

Centre County Commissioner Michael Pipe said he was sold the minute he heard about the project. “Not only is it a fun idea, it also engages many different groups within the Centre County community. Dr. Andris and her team working with elementary school students as well as the County is a perfect example of what town and gown can do together.”
