GIS Coalition is an organization that offers students majoring, minoring, or sharing an interest in GIS opportunities to develop supplementary knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the professional GIS industry.

“We want to enhance in-class teaching of GIS, and better prepare students for careers through speakers and out of class activities,” said president Blake Naito, currently a junior majoring in Geography, GIS option. The club’s speakers are a variety of people, mostly Penn State students and faculty, who give members an idea of what they are working on in the field, job expectations, and other opportunities that are available.

Additionally, the GIS Coalition works with other on campus organizations, like Club Emergency Management to map various scenarios, both on campus and off. Last year, they participated in emergency mapping of the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. As of the beginning of November, the GIS Coalition has been headquartered in 229B Walker Building, where they offer as a resource additional help with GIS projects.
