Position description
This research examines competition between conifers and broadleaved trees along an altitude gradient in Central Japan.  A component of this research examines forest structure and growth using tree-ring analysis (Dendrochronology).  I am looking for a student to help in processing the tree cores.  Processing the cores will include gluing the cores to mounts, sanding the cores and counting the tree rings.

Desired Qualifications
The candidate for this position should be detail-oriented and comfortable with woodworking techniques.  Knowledge of how to process tree cores is not necessary but a willingness to learn is.  Preference will be given to students who have taken Biogeography (GEOG 111/397A), Forest Geography (GEOG 411/411W) or Landscape Ecology (GEOG 311/414).
Candidates must be willing to contribute 80-120 total hours of work toward the project over the summer or fall semester, resulting in 2-3 credit hours applied to the transcript. Credit for work performed in summer may be applied to fall semester.  There is no monetary stipend attached to this assistantship, although the experiences gained in this work will be immediately valuable when applying for graduate school or full-time employment.
