Research Interests

Cai's research includes geographical information systems, human-computer interaction, information retrieval, and geography of cyberspace. His recent work, funded by NSF, involves developing cooperative human-GIS interfaces to enable multimodal, mixed-initiative dialogues, for collaborative problem-solving with GIS.

Teaching

Cai's teaching interests include relational databases, spatial databases, and geographical information science.

Dr. Cai is the recipient of a NASA Global Change Graduate Fellowship, the Allen Kent Award from University of Pittsburgh, and a presidential award from Tianjin University, China. He has been invited to present his work at many international conferences. He has published papers in the international journal NETWORKS, and in the proceedings of the IEEE international symposium on circuits and systems, international conference on spatial data handling, international symposium on spatial data accuracy, and the international conference on tele-geoprocessing. He is an active member of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) and American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS). He was a research scientist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences for five years. Dr. Cai has broad experience, including the NASA Global Change Program, USDA Forest Service, Pennsylvania Department of Education, as well as the National Planning and Development Committee of China.
