Geography 508: Interpreting the Cultural Landscape

This course will serve as a critical introduction to the burgeoning field of landscape interpretation. The course will be divided into three parts. Part one will provide an introduction to the multiple definitions of the term landscape and their complex genealogies will be traced in geography and other fields. The study of landscape will then be situated both within traditional cultural geography and what is sometimes called the new cultural geography.

The second part of the course will be devoted to the theory and critique of landscape interpretation. In this section we will discuss the theorization of landscape interpretation over the past fifteen years. We will concentrate on articles exemplifying empiricist, feminist, Marxist and post-structuralist approaches.

The final part of the course will be devoted to the study of the landscape as process. We will explore the role that landscape plays in social/cultural processes. We will then situate these themes within the larger context of social science. The course will then concentrate on nine different themes. Three to four articles will be assigned for each theme with an attempt to achieve a geographical and theoretical balance among the articles. The themes are as follows:

Note: This course has been organized around the forthcoming reader focused on interpreting the cultural landscape edited by Rich Schein and Jim Duncan.
