Joe Schall - Resume Expert
First Question - How easy is it to look at and read?
o Don't have too much white space, but not too much text
o Only 2 margins is optimal (don't have tons of indents)
o Look at template styles (in MS Word)
o Dates can be effective, but not if they make it too congested - do you actually need them?
Heading, skill summary, objective, education, work exp.
Email address should be professional looking (preferably not hotmail, yahoo, etc if you have a work or school address); cell number is not a bad idea
Make sure to use the actual name of the degree you are working for, not just the major
o Can list some courses (organize by type i.e. communication, social science, etc) if they help specify and support what you are applying for
o Study abroad also good
Experience should dominate the resume
o Remember - reverse chronological order (most recent first)
Computer skills category is basically mandatory
o Could organize experiences/courses by OS (Windows, Mac, Linix/Unix, GIS-related)
Activities - not an essential part, but can certainly help your cause
o Only put down activities you want to talk about, or ones that you are able to explain
Scholarships - be selective, don't put down all 30
References - ask your references if it would be okay to list them as a reference on your resume, be specific
Schall's manual, "Styles for Students" is available online, or a hard copy for free. See Presentation for URLs
Online portfolios - remember, whatever you put there could be seen by a potential employer.
Put URL on your resume! But don't make it too dominant
