The role of natural and human disturbance and understory bamboos in subalpine forest dynamics in giant panda habitat in Sichuan, People's Republic of China

The goal of this study is to examine the consequence of different forest canopy disturbances (treefall gaps, selective cutting, clearcutting) and understory bamboos on the dynamics and diversity of high elevation forests used by pandas in China. Field sites for this research are in Natural Reserves in the Qionglai (Wolong) and Min Mountains (Tangjiahe, Wang Lang) on the eastern escarpment of the Tibetan Plateau. Alan Taylor has worked closely on this project with Chinese collaborators and the World Wide Fund For Nature whose objectives are to preserve wild panda populations in China.
