Jonathan Nelson is a PhD student in Geography at the Pennsylvania State University, a spatial web developer at the Vermont Agency of Transportation’s Asset Management and Performance Bureau, and a past trainee in the NSF Big Data Social Science IGERT. Jonathan completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography at the University of New Mexico and a Master of Science degree in Geography at the Pennsylvania State University. He has held Cartographer and User Experience Designer positions at National geographic and Strava Metro, and is passionate about the design of both print and interactive maps. His research interests include cartography, GIScience, user interface/experience design, human-computer/data interaction, movement data, and visual analytics. His work emphasizes the role of visualization and visual communication in making data more accessible, usable, and actionable. Jonathan enjoys all types of outdoor adventures, photography, and spending quality time with his better half, April, and their three dogs.
