Yanan Xin is a researcher at GeoVISTA Center, Penn State University, pursuing her PhD under the guidance of Dr. Alan MacEachren. Her research interests across the GIScience field include: geovisual analytics, geospatial big data mining, machine learning, spatial statistics, urban analytics, mobility analysis, and quality control for volunteered geographic information.
She is currently developing geovisualization strategies to alleviate the influence of methodological bias by understanding the complexity and uncertainty introduced by machine learning algorithms in geospatial data analysis. The application of this research primarily targets spatio-temporal mobility data. This includes: analyzing travel patterns of sports event attendees, optimising the usage of vehicle-sharing system, and improving the quality of participatory mobile sensing data.
Before joining Penn State, Yanan Xin completed her master's degree in Urban Spatial Analytics at University of Pennsylvania. She also worked as a GIS developer at the District Department of Transportation and a Spatial Analyst at the University of Pennsylvania.
