Steven Maruszewski, Assistant Vice President, Physical Plant, will talk about Penn State’s Green Initiatives.

Maruszewski  previously spoke at the coffee hour several years ago where he unveiled several of the University’s plans for implementing more sustainable business operations. 

Since that time, there has been great progress on all fronts related to sustainability not only within operations but also in all other aspects of the institution.  During this session, Maruszewski will be providing a significant sampling of the University’s sustainability efforts and the resulting impacts on environmental stewardship as well as the finances of the institution.  He will conclude his talk with an update on the status of the latest effort to establish a University Sustainability Strategic Plan that promotes utilizing the University’s facilities as a living lab for sustainability literacy, solutions and leadership.


Steve Maruszewski

Maruszewski  is currently the Assistant Vice President for Physical Plant.  In his current role, he jointly oversees a workforce of over 1300 professional, technical service and administrative employees.  His responsibilities also include leading the University’s Environmental Stewardship Strategy, Co-chairing the University’s Sustainability Strategic Planning Process and leading the efforts associated with defining and managing the campus deferred maintenance and capital renewal needs.


Penn State’s physical plant consists of over 25 million gross square feet made up of over 1500 buildings located on 23 campuses around Pennsylvania.  The Office of Physical Plant is responsible for planning design and construction of facilities, real estate services, utility procurement, and environmental health and safety programs at all campuses.  In addition at University Park, Physical Plant is responsible for facilities maintenance and operations, grounds maintenance, utility systems operations and maintenance, and physical plant administration and financial services.


Maruszewski  began his career at Penn State in February 1995.  Prior to his current position, he held the following positions at Penn State:  Project Manager; Manager of Design Services; Director of Commonwealth Services; Director of Design & Construction and Deputy Associate Vice President for Physical Plant.


Maruszewski  is a Penn State graduate from the Architectural Engineering program and prior to joining Penn State worked as a consulting engineer for major Architectural Engineering firms and was a managing principal in two mechanical electrical consulting firms.
