The accelerated proliferation of geographic information systems (GIS), especially in the last decade, has greatly expanded the connotation of GIS technology from primarily a diverse suite of digital objects, representations, and devices that create or make use of geographical information to a mediated means with which we humans experience, explore, or make sense of the world. The research perspective of humanistic GIS is proposed to better encompass the expanded category of GIS technology as well as the opportunities and challenges that go with it.
Wildfires have been increasing in frequency and duration in the western U.S. and the wildfire season has been increasing in length such that many regions now claim that there is no wildfire season anymore but that wildfires have become a year-round threat. While there are many causes of the increase in wildfires in the western U.S., it is becoming clear that wildfires not only affect forests and grasslands, but also have impacts on the health of populations downwind.
The potential of infrastructure ‘as solution’ is currently at the forefront of American political consciousness. Historic levels of investment in infrastructure proffer seismic material, economic, and symbolic transformations at a near-continental scale. However, the present policy context for infrastructure planning in the U.S. is confounded by a mosaic of decision-making authorities that hamper the development of cohesive approaches to sustainable and equitable development.
The link between climate change and water is one of often neglected and not well understood. This ambiguous relationship combined with climate change induced extremities and uncertainties exacerbate the propensity for conflicts over shared waters.
Srinivas Chokkakula, Ministry of Jal Shakti Research Chair with the Centre for Policy Research in New Delhi, will give the talk “Conflicts and Complicit Climate Change: Transboundary Water Governance in South Asia." Talk is co-sponsored by Penn State's Department of Asian Studies.
Arctic cyclones are strong storms which travel into the Arctic and are associated with changes to the temperature, moisture, surface energy budget, winds, and precipitation. However, their timing, strength, location and cumulative effects/impacts of these cyclones on the sea ice are not well established or straightforward. Previous studies have shown conflicting results that cyclone frequency and intensity have not necessarily changed over the past four decades (1980-20).
Agricultural landscapes in the United States are becoming drastically simplified and commodified, causing concern for biodiversity loss, environmental degradation, and widening socioeconomic injustices upon which U.S. agriculture has been built. Given that crop production is heavily concentrated in certain areas and crop diversity is declining, there is a critical need to understand pathways toward diversifying agricultural systems and increasing agrobiodiversity writ large. This research addresses this need through mixed and multiscale methods that model crop diversity across the U.S.
